I’m usually not the biggest fan of Italian restaurants, as for the most part, I don’t like to pay for dishes which are easily replicated at home for a fraction of the price. However, I did very much enjoy the good, straightforward Italian food Il Bordello serves, for reasonable prices and good size portions.
Having been informed of the large portions beforehand (and knowing the three ladies on the table were likely to need help with their mains), I decided to share the San Daniele Bruschetta to start. Simple but very tasty, it certainly did the job in whetting my appetite.
I had ordered the Sausage and Mushroom Tagliatelli as a main which again was nothing fancy, but consisted of quality ingredients cooked well. The sausage was very meaty and the pasta fresh. I wasn’t disappointed by the ladies, either, providing me with several pieces of their tasty pizza, so that they had room for dessert.
I have to admit that I didn’t really have room for any dessert, but the ladies had made the right choice in leaving space, as the profiteroles they ordered were gorgeous in both looks and taste (I did manage a small spoonful!).
Despite having built a rather good appetite in walking the 6 mile journey to Wapping from South East London, I felt full to the brim after leaving the restaurant. I also felt satisfied that I had eaten good, hearty, traditional Italian dishes for reasonable prices. The bill came to about £30 a head, I think (the pre-restaurant pints and red wine during the meal were starting to take their toll), but with the unobtrusive service from Italian waiters and the very enjoyable meal, it was well worth it.
