The Rivington Grill in Greenwich is sister restaurant to the successful and eponymous restaurant in Shoreditch. The fayre is traditional British and the feel of the place quite traditional, too. See more at www.rivingtongrill.co.uk.
The decor includes a lot of dark wood, coupled with thick white tablecloths and crockery, which gives a classic feel to the place, which I liked.
With a week off my Sunday league football, my partner and I decided to take advantage of this rare opportunity to go for brunch. I’m not usually keen on going to brunch at a restaurant, as it often doesn’t measure up to my expectations, nor empty stomach.
The Rivington managed to measure up in both regards, providing a tasty full english which left me replete, rather than weighted. My partner went for scrambled eggs with field mushrooms and bubble & squeak, all of which she enjoyed (although she wasn’t sure about the bubble & squeak).
The full english consisted of the usual sausage, egg, bacon and toast, plus the less usual black pudding and even rarer bubble & squeak. It was all cooked very well, with quality ingredients all round. The egg was runny, the sausage nice and meaty, the bacon crisp, the bubble & squeak tasty and the black pudding very light and crisp. I was most impressed with the black pudding, which had a lovely peppery flavour along with the crisp and light texture. The meal was washed down with a good old cup of Assam tea.
The service was good, although the table next to us did not fare quite so well, waiting 10 mins for toast, ordered when their mains arrived.
I’ve often looked in on the menu of the Rivington and not found it particularly exciting nor enticing. Now knowing that the cooking is definitely up to scratch, I am far more inclined to try them out for dinner another time. The banquet menu was certainly intriguing and bears further investigation. It’s worth checking out for brunch in any case, although at £20 all in, not every week.
