Gourmet Burger Kitchen is a mainly London chain of burger bars which total about 40 establishments across the UK. The chain has been around for at least 4 years and I’ve noticed that they seem to have been expanding at a rate of knots in the last year or so, with the Greenwich location being one of the more recent openings.
The menu is impressive for a burger bar and it’s pretty likely you’re going to find an option that suits, although they do not serve onion rings, which was a little disappointing. I was also quite impressed by the veggie options, some of which looked very appetising in their own right, and I don’t often say that!
I went for the Satay Burger, whilst my two companions chose the Classic Cheese Burger and the Jnr Puy Lentil Burger, respectively, all three of us choosing fries to go with each. The burger itself was well cooked and a good size. The spicy satay sauce, however, wasn’t very spicy at all and the relish seemed to be the predominant sauce within the bun. The bun itself was also quite disappointing, especially as the menu had said it was a sour-dough sesame seed bun. To me it seemed like a standard burger bun and a cheap one at that, being flaky and coming apart far too easily. The Puy Lentil burger was rather bland, considering it was supposed to have green curry and spring onions in it (even the Jnr version) and I don’t really understand why the Jnr version has no salad or relish on it whilst the adult version does. Surely you want to be encouraging the children to eat salad and I would have thought incorporating it into a burger would, to some extent, hide the green stuff. Then again, I don’t have kids, so what do I know? The chilli sauce and garlic mayo side sauces did at least both seem to be pretty fresh, although none of us thought too much of the chips.
Price wise, the cost isn’t that bad, and is comparable to gastropub prices with each adult burger around the £7 mark. The bill for the three of us, including drinks and sides came to £34, which was OK. I did like the fact that there was a good range of burgers, including lamb, pork and chicken options and you could turn any one of these into a Jnr version (‘not just for adults!’). I did walk away feeling disappointed with the meal I’d had, though, as I know burgers, not to mention the chips, can be so much better. Maybe my expectations of a decent burger have been set too high for the UK, having sampled superb burgers in the US, including my all time favourite of a Navajo burger in the small town of Mexican Hat, (so named as there’s a rock in the shape of a sombrero, just outside the town) on the border of Utah and Arizona . The Navajo Burger I had, consisted of a burger, served in fried flat bread with a spicy chilli on top. Cardiac inducing but spectacularly tasty (maybe an idea for my dinners blog?).
I probably will sample GBK’s burgers again, but the search for a good burger joint continues.
