I flew over to New Jersey for the office Christmas party. I didn’t take as many pictures as I’d hoped, probably due to the amount of alcohol consumed over the weekend.
NY and NJ are pretty cool places and the food was good, too. I started off with a hearty breakfast (not shown) from a local diner in Jersey City, which consisted of home fries (sauteed potatoes), sausage, wholewheat toast and eggs (sunny side up). Good, but could have down with a bit more liquid, like baked beans or something. Baked Beans are certainly a dish the Americans could use more of. The coffee was about ten times better that you get in the UK.
Dinner on Sat night was Meatloaf, mash with spring onions and garlic spinach. I thought the mash with spring onions was particularly good, and something I will definitely try myself, along with the meatloaf. That was a good dish to soak up the booze later on in the evening. The place was just a cool local bar ( I think it was called Relax) which also served food, again in Jersey City (close to where my hotel was).
The final meal was in a Chinese in Hoboken, NJ, where I had the hot and sour soup and General Tso’s spicy chicken, with brown rice and stir fried broccoli. I liked the way you could easily get brown rice at Chinese, as this is quite rare in the UK. In general, there seems to be better Chinese restaurants in NY and NJ than in the UK, which is a shame because I really do like a good Chinese. A lot of London Chinese restaurants just seem to pile on the MSG and churn out pretty poor dishes.
